My confession: I like to eat. I didn't know this for many years, because I was always eating the wrong things.

Caffe Calabria on 30th street in North Park has the best coffee in town.
Basil Thai in Bird Rock is my favorite.
Michele Coulon sounds like a hair salon, but it’s actually a tiny little French place in La Jolla that serves dinner only once or twice a week. The rest of the time they are dessert specialists. Great selection of Belgian beer, and the dinner was amazing.
Hoboken in Pacific Beach is the place for authentic New Jersey style pizza. Say hi to Tommy, the owner.
Jyoti-Bihanga for vegan comfort food. Their mock shrimp are better than the real thing! And their crème brulée will fool you, too. Beware though, the owners go out of town for about a month every summer (much to my dismay). Sipz for vegan asian food. The soft chow mein noodles with “chicken” is dangerously addictive!
Madras is another good place for vegetarian, served South Indian style. That means it’s usually slow, and there’s no ice in the water, but the food is really cheap and really filling.
Jasmine and China Max on Convoy St. are pretty good for dim sum. If you’re in a hurry or you’re alone, skip the restaurant and go to Jasmine Express and grab a drink at grocery store next door.
